In early March, the University of Delaware D3 Club Hockey Team’s season came to a close. This season was a huge success for the team, as they finished with a record of 18-10-2 and solidified their reputation as a solid hockey club. After finishing last season 10-7-1, this season clearly proved to be a massive improvement.
Starting in late September, the Blue Hens got off to an incredible start to their season. In the first 12 games of the year, the club went 11-0-1. This was done through a strong veteran core as well as the influx of great rookie talent. With this success, the club was able to maintain a top 10 Atlantic Region ranking throughout the season as well as gain an invite to the Empire Classic Tournament. The Blue Hens would go on to finish tenth in the region and play in their first regional tournament in program history. Additionally, the Blue Hens finished second in the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference National Division with a record of 7-3-0-1 and made it to the championship game. The DVCHC acknowledged the Blue Hen’s success as many players were nominated to the All-Star team and Select team. Additionally, many players and our coach won awards for being the best in their position.
The team looks to continue the success from this season in the 2018-2019 season. The Blue Hens’ ability to compete with top teams such as Fairfield, George Mason and Frozen Four Finalist Quinnipiac solidifies them as one of the top teams in the ACHA D3. With the team getting its first taste of the Regional Tournament, the team will look to make the tournament again as well as make it to Nationals. The team graduated six seniors and is very appreciative of all their time and effort that they put into the team in order to get it where it is today. However, the Blue Hens are excited to be adding another strong rookie class and see how the veteran players will develop and fill the spots of those before them.
