Delaware Ice Hockey

Stony Brook Weekend Preview

The team is headed up to Long Island this weekend to take on rivals, the Stony Brook University Seawolves! Last season the Hens and the Seawolves battled it out for who came out on top. For the first time in three years, Delaware swept Stony Brook, and to make it better, it was on home ice. However, when they travelled to New York, Stony Brook came out on top. This weekend, the series will be intense as both teams try to come out on top. At the Rinx, Friday night puck drop is at 8:30 and Saturday afternoon at 3:30.

This past weekend the Hens split a series against Rutgers University. Friday night the teams played at the Rust, and the Hens lost 7-6. Goals were scored by Drew Torrey, Cole Zucker, Chris Mazzella (2), Shane Mullin, and Devin Jenny. The team was unable to put together three full periods of Delaware Hockey. On Saturday, they were able to bounce back with a 4-2 win over the Ice Knights. Goal scorers were Mazzella (2) and Mullin (2). The boys put their hard hats on, and outworked the Ice Knights to get the W. Assistant captain, Mike Zidansek, had a few words to say about the weekend, “Friday night, we went up big in the first period and thought we could ride the lead to the end of the game. We allowed ourselves to become complacent and paid the price. Saturday was a must win for us after the big let down the night before. The game was much closer, which forced us to stay focused the entire game.”

The # 11 Seawolves also split a series against the #8 Ohio this past weekend. Their game on Friday night resulted in an 5-4 overtime loss, and on Saturday they won 3-2 in overtime. Stony Brook has been an established team skill wise and in their strength for the past few years. Delaware will need to be able to put together a full 60 minutes of hockey this weekend, and reduce the penalties called on them. The Hens will need use the speed to their advantage, and stay strong on defense.

Player to watch for the weekend is freshman, Harrison Good! Harrison has made his presence on the ice known with his consistent hard work on defense, especially when on the penalty kill. As a rookie, he has really stepped up to give this team all that he has, and already has three goals under his belt!

To keep up with how this weekend goes, be sure to follow all of the team’s social media pages for updates. The Hens won’t be back at the Rust until December 1st against Pitt, and they will be honoring all those who have served our country with their annual Military Night. On the 2nd, the Hens will be taking on Pitt again for the annual “Hockey Holidays” game, so be sure to look out for the boys in Trabant the week leading up to it for a chance to win a raffle prize!
