Delaware Ice Hockey

Senior Spotlight: Corey Leskanic

Future doctor, Corey Leskanic, comes to UD from Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. He got into playing hockey through his dad, who loved watching the game. As a child, Corey used to play on a pond near home, and was put on the ice around the age of five. He has been playing since kindergarten, and has loved the sport ever since. Corey really enjoyed the years of hockey he played in high school, especially his junior and senior year. He described it as, “totally different from every other way I’ve played before,” and he was very devoted to his juniors team, the NJ Hitmen.

“Playing hockey in Delaware is a great experience and it is something that I will never forget. For people coming, in it’s one of the best programs out there in our division, and one of the best teams with guys who are really good friends.”

Choosing to come to Delaware was a very last minute decision, however he made the decision to come after seeing the hockey facilities, and realizing it was the best school for his major, Biology with a pre-med track.  “Going to Nationals last year just because the year before we got close, but didn’t make it, and that was my first time going to one of the tournaments all the way out in Chicago,” Corey recalled as his favorite memory of being with the Blue Hens. When it comes to rivalries, he says that Stony Brook and Rutgers are definitely the ones to beat. “Stony Brook is always a really good team, we always have really good game with them. Also, Rutgers because we know a lot of them.” He says that Liberty and URI are more rivals of the past than the present.

Being one of four seniors on the team, Corey is a role model to some of the younger players. He feels his role as a senior is to “make sure everyone is more of a team player. I never really get down on people or criticize people. I kind of help with motivation.”

As he approaches graduation, his last words for the team and future players to come are, “Playing hockey in Delaware is a great experience and it is something that I will never forget. For people coming, in it’s one of the best programs out there in our division, and one of the best teams with guys who are really good friends.”
