Delaware Ice Hockey

Senior Spotlight: Cole Zucker

Finance and Accounting double major and captain, Cole Zucker, has been playing with the Blue Hens since his freshman year. Coming to Newark from Marlton, New Jersey, he started playing hockey when he was five years old. When he started, he hated it and told his dad that he didn’t like being hot and cold at the same time.

After trying some other sports, Cole came back to hockey when he was about nine years old. After years of shooting on his older brother, who played goalie, in their basement, Cole learned how to shoot and was ready to take the ice. And so the story goes, he’s been on the ice ever since. In high school, one of his fond hockey memories was a  championship game he played in his sophomore year. He had already scored twice that game, and with just seconds left on the clock Cole tied up the game. Earning a hattrick and going into overtime, Zucker assisted the winning goal.

This Rangers fan chose to come to UD because it wasn’t too far from home and had heard about the National championship the Hens won two years before he came. On the plus side, this school had a perfect balance of work and play. While playing at Delaware, Cole’s best memory is “assisting on Vinny Zingarelli’s overtime goal” when they attended the National tournament in 2016. He remembers that “it’s always a battle playing Stony Brook, they’ve always been consistent.” He also adds that Rutgers gives them a run for their money.

Joking that he is team babysitter, this Captain feels that his role on the team is to make sure everyone is focused and stays in check. “We have a young team, and I try to be a role model on and off the ice.” For the rest of the team and future Hens to come, Cole leaves them with this, “Enjoy it while you’re here, it goes by very quick.” He also says to “keep the tradition going,” there has been more than forty years of Delaware hockey, and there are many more to come, so keep playing with that UD pride.
