Weekend Preview
By: Kerri Mottola
The Blue Hens take on Rutgers this weekend! The team will be at Fred Rust on Friday, and then away for an afternoon game on Saturday.
The #40 ranked Rutgers University Ice Knights split last weekend with #26 Lebanon Valley, losing 10-4 on Friday night and then coming back with a 4-2 victory on Saturday. They are coming in with two wins and two losses this season, with only one of those being home games. Players to watch this weekend on Rutgers include forward Brian Gnad, who already has 5 goals under his belt.
Delaware is coming off of a successful weekend against Navy, with a 4-1 victory at home on Friday night, and a 6-3 win on the road on Saturday. This brings us to 3 wins and 1 loss this season. The weekend sweep moved the team to #16 on the national tournament rankings and got the team received a first place vote something the program has not seen in 2 years.
We’re happy to see some high scoring games from the Hens, and we’re hoping to see this trend continue moving forward. Cole Zucker is currently leading the team in points, with 5 goals and 4 assists. Leo Skehan follows with 1 goal and 7 assists. Offensive effort has been strong throughout the entire team, with a lot of secondary scoring from both offense and defense.
Delaware’s players to watch this weekend include forwards Dan Going and Shane Mullin. Going has 3 goals and 1 assist and has consistently worked to create opportunity in front of the net. Mullin had a few great hits against Navy this past weekend.
As far as areas for improvement for the Hens this weekend, we are looking for more proactive playing. The team needs to keep their legs moving and outwork their opponents for a full 60 minutes of hockey.
Friday is Greek Night at Fred Rust Ice Arena on South Campus. Come out with your chapter and support your Blue Hens. This will count as a CAP event! The puck drops on Friday at 7 pm.
Weekend Schedule:
Friday 10/9, 7 PM: Fred Rust Arena
