Lebanon Valley Weekend Preview

By: Kerri Mottola

The University of Delaware D1 Mens Ice Hockey Team cannot be more excited for their Friday night home game, as it is Breast Cancer Night at the Fred Rust Ice Arena!  The boys are back in their home arena after a weekend on the road at URI.

The team takes on the Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen this weekend. Last weekend,  LVC beat Drexel 4-3 on Friday and 8-3 on Saturday.  The team is coming into this weekend with a 8-2-0 record.  Forward Bryan Hovanec leads the team in points (15), with 13 goals and 2 assists.  Hovanec had a huge weekend against Drexel, scoring the first goal of the game on Friday, and then putting away 4 goals during their Saturday sweep.

The Blue Hens were equally successful last weekend, coming back to Delaware with two consecutive victories over the URI Rams.  Friday night, the Hens won in a shootout, making the final score 5-4.  Saturday night was another win, 3-2 over the Rams.  This brings the Blue Hens to 8 wins and 3 losses for the season.

The Hens are on a winning streak, victorious in their last 5 games.  We hope they can keep up the strength this weekend and get a win for all the fans coming out to Breast Cancer Night on Saturday.  The recent wins can be attributed to strategic and cohesive movement on the ice, strong defense, and a lot of scoring.  We’re looking to see a continuation of these trends as we head into the weekend.

The player to watch this weekend is Senior defenseman and Asst. Captain Nick Ustaski.  This team leader works diligently each game to provide strength at the blue line.  Ustaski is coming off a strong weekend offensively as well, scoring the Hens’ first goal in the Friday night game, and scoring again Saturday night, putting the team ahead in the third period.  We’re eager to see what Ustaski can do this weekend.

Friday night’s game is exceptionally important to the team, as they are playing for a cause.  It is Breast Cancer Night at Fred Rust Ice Arena, and all of the proceeds from the game will go to the Team Jen Foundation.  This organization provides financial assistance to young people battling breast cancer. More information can be found at http://www.teamjeninc.org/. The team’s game worn breast cancer jerseys will also be auctioned off during the game at silent auction starting at $60. Please visit the booster club table during the game for the chance to get your hands on a game worn jersey!
Come on out to Fred Rust on Friday night at 8:15 PM to see some good hockey and support a great cause!
