Delaware Ice Hockey

Fil Sherry

Fil Sherry was a prolific goal scorer and highly physical player in the early ‘80s.  “Franchise” was the team’s leader on the ice and in the locker room, chosen team captain his junior and senior years while serving as Club President for both those years.

Fil’s career started with a bang, as he notched a hat trick his first collegiate game vs. Duquesne.  He went on to win the Rookie-of-the Year honors for the Mid Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Conference.  Throughout his career, Fil was a dominant player in the MACHC, named 1st team all-conference three times and awarded league MVP in both his junior and senior years.

A highlight of Fil’s career occurred his junior year, as the Hens defeated arch-rival Villanova to win the Mid Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Conference Championship.  In his senior year, Fil put a permanent mark on Delaware Hockey history on February 29, 1984, when he scored his 100th career goal in a 10-2 drubbing of Drexel University, becoming at that time only the second player in Delaware history to do so.

Fil graduated with a degree in Business Administration and Finance.  He currently serves on the UD Ice Hockey Alumni Board and has been very involved in creating a Mentoring & Networking Program to benefit current players. Fil is a Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch and lives in Hockessin, Delaware, with wife Susan.  The couple has three grown children.
