Delaware Ice Hockey

Drexel Game Recap

The Blue Hens played an exciting game at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on November 23rd! They came out victorious, defeating the Drexel Dragons 3-1!

Puck dropped at 1:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon. The first period was an equal battle for both teams. Both teams came out ready to play. Delaware had good puck movement in front of Drexel’s goal. They took a lot of shots, but had no luck hitting the back of the net. Drexel was on a power play, and scored with 5 minutes and 14 seconds left on the clock. At the end of the period, the score was 1-0, Dragons.

With the second period underway, UD needed to make a comeback. They were successful on their penalty kills, and played hard. They dominated their offensive zone, and finally with 7 minutes and 48 seconds on the clock, defenseman, Cameron Bregenzer, scored the first Blue Hen goal of the night! The game was tied. The team continued their success, and scored again! With a minute and 33 on the clock, John Redgate passed the puck off to Shane Mullin, who scored the second goal. With the period ending, the Hens were up 2-1!

The Dragons came into the third period hoping to make a comeback. Delaware kept their composure, and continued to play their game. The Blue Hens played awesome on defense, and goalie, Patrick Rochefort, made some incredible saves throughout the game. Our offense continued to work hard, and they repeatedly made great plays. A little more than half way through the period, Cole Zucker solidified the win for us, and scored UD’s third goal! Under a minute left in the game, the Dragons had a player in the box, and pulled their goalie. Delaware took the W, and could not have been more excited!

I caught up with a few of the players after the game. Patrick Rochefort and Vinny Zingarelli talked to me about the outcome of the game. Patrick said “It was good to get two wins in a row, and it was a good team effort.” Vinny said, “It was good to get a win to finish up the three game weekend and to go into Thanksgiving break. It will definitely make my turkey taste better.” I talked to Nick Ustaski about what it was like to play on professional ice, and he said, “It was definitely a different and fun experience. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I’m glad I got to do it in my senior year.”

The team takes on Stony Brook University, away, December 5th and 6th, so keep up with our Twitter page for updates on the game! The team would like to wish all of our friends, families, and fans a happy Thanksgiving, and we will see you back home January 9th and 10th when we take on Colorado State University!
