Delaware Ice Hockey

Feb 4th Maryland/Alvernia Recap

The Blue Hens returned to the ice at the Herbert Wells Ice rink to play the Maryland Terps.  It is always an action packed game and was not any different this year! The game has become a great Rivalry and is always a close and competitive between the the two teams.  It was senior night for the Terps and they did not disappoint with the large crowd of fans and energy they brought with them. It was was epic to say the least. The Blue Hens’s went down early due to a penalty riddled first period.  A questionable boarding call on Garrett put the team down for 5 minutes early in the first, which eventually led to a Terps’ goal.   As Hines continued to make notable saves the Blue Hens settled in from their two month break off the ice, they were able to tie it up with 1 minute remaining.  Shane Saladis came up big with the go ahead goal to make it 3-2 in favor of the Blue Hens.    An unfortunate breakdown led to Maryland  tying it up with only 9 seconds remaining in regulation forcing an overtime period.  Again a series of penalties factored into a disappointing overtime loss for the Blue Hens. Tallying points for the Hens were Saladis – 2 goals, Coverdale – 2 assists, Scafidi – 1 goal, Knight – 1 assist, & Cacchioli – 1 assist.

Sunday the team traveled to the Santander Arena in Reading, Pa. to play Alvernia for their Senior night.  After a late night return from Maryland the team began the game slowly, but as the game went on they pushed the pace and finished with a victory.  Returning this spring it was great to see  Andrew Knight once again release that blistering slap shot from the top of the circle. Putting the Hens on the board in the first period he blew it by the goalie without a reaction until hit his the back of the net. Tallying points for the Hens during the game were Knight – 1 goal & 2 assists, Cacchiolli – 2 assists, Scafidi – 2 assists, Bowers – 1 goal, Garrett – 1 goal & 1 assist, Bishop – 1 assist, Bolles – 1 assist, Weindling – 1 assist, & Berner buried the first goal of his college career.
