Coaching Staff


Coach Julian Giantonio is entering his 2nd season as the Head Coach for the University of Delaware ACHA D1 team. Giantonio grew up in the Everett Massachusetts area and played his college career for the University of Massachusetts at Boston at the NCAA D3 ECAC East level from 2001-2006. His freshmen year, Giantonio was named Rookie of the Year and also received the team’s Annual Strength and Conditioning Award where he put up 10 goals and 22 points. He also was a part of the National Student Exchange program, which sent him to the University of Arizona to play one season for their D1 ACHA Wildcats program where he received the Wild Cats Team Leader Award and Wild Cats Work Out Award.  Giantonio also played a year of professional hockey for the Delaware Federals of the Federal Hockey League and ended his NCAA career with 17 goals, 27 assists and 87 PIMS.
Following a solid playing career, Julian transitioned into the coaching sphere. He was an asst. coach at the local Everett High School girl’s hockey team from 2006-2009.  He then became the head coach for the North Shore Raiders Super Elite U19 travel team, while also assisting local Everett High School boy’s hockey team from 2009-2012.  While helping coach with the local hockey programs in his area, he was also the head coach of the Tufts University ACHA Club Ice Hockey program, helping the team grow and expand from its initial inception.  After Tufts, Julian accepted the position of Associate Head Coach and Head Recruiting Coordinator with Williston State College located in North Dakota.  At Williston, Giantonio helped the program win a NCJAA National Championship during the 2013-2014 season.
Giantonio has USA Hockey Level 4 Coaching Certification and received a Masters of Education/Coaching from Greenville University in 2016. He has also been involved in Roger Neilson’s Coaching Seminar in Windsor, Ontario and participated in the MIAA Ice Hockey Summit in Marlboro, Massachusetts.  In addition, Giantonio has also been a Head On-Ice Instructor with Jeff Serowic’s Pro Ambitions since 2006.

In his first season, Giantonio led the Blue Hens to a 21-9-2 record. Following Christmas Break, he lead the team to an unprecedented 11 Wins and only two regulation losses for the rest of the season. The team also clinched a spot in 2015-2016 ACHA D1 National Tournament as the number 14 seed and won their first nationals game vs. Mercyhurst University since Delaware Hockey won the ACHA Tournament in 2012. The team lost to eventual ACHA D1 Champions Lindenwood University scoring the most goals on them then the team let up the entire tournament.

He works for a Delaware banking industry and resides in the Newark, Delaware area.

After finishing a very successful 4 years as a student and hockey player at the University, Alex has decided to return to help coach the Blue Hens. He was a creator of the Blue Hen DIII program and is looking forward to continuing to help the Men’s D1 grow and succeed.

Prior to playing hockey at the University of Delaware, he spent four years at Saint John Vianney High School in Holmdel, NJ where he played football, hockey, and lacrosse. Growing up Alex played for many hockey club in New Jersey including the Red Bank Generals and the Old Bridge Jr. Knights.

At UD, Alex was the sports chair for UDance, the schools largest student-run philanthropy, UDance is a 12-hour philanthropic dance marathon that has helped raise millions of dollars over the last nine years to support medical research and financial assistance for families of children with cancer nationwide.

Rubin assists in all aspects of Delaware Hockey and is a main recruiter for potential Blue Hen Hockey players.

Former Blue Hen goalie Nick Matarese returns for his 9th season as one of the University of Delaware’s Asst. coaches helping with goalies along with other assistant duties.
Nick played four years for Delaware and was one of the netminders in both the ’07 and ’08 ACHA final four appearances posted by the Blue Hens. During high school, college, and still today he trained with and is an instructor at the Tim Ondra Elite Goaltending Training Center and brings this knowledge and experience of both on and off ice training to the goalies.
Nick is currently runs The Barn, his own creative design agency. The Barn is now an award winning company and one of the top design agencies in the Philadelphia and Delaware area. He produces all UD Hockey media, promotions, and other graphic designs. Nick also recently designed and was under contract with the Columbus Cottonmouths of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) designing their new team logo, apparel, Jerseys, hockey gear, and promotional items.

He and his wife, Jenn, reside in St. Georges, Delaware.
