HEAD COACH: John Donahue


The University of Delaware Men’s Division 1 Hockey team is pleased to announce John Donahue as the program’s new head coach. The search for the new head coach produced several strong candidates, but it was clear that Coach Donahue was the right fit to lead the Blue Hens as the team continues their quest for another National title. The program is confident that Coach Donahue will continue the proud tradition of UD hockey, and add to the prominence as one of the top D1 ACHA programs in the country. Coach Donahue has a thorough understanding of what it takes to build a championship team, and he understands the importance of balancing both education and sportsmanship.

Donahue’s coaching experience goes back more than 20 years coaching top teams in the tri-state area. He has coached AA programs for both the Mt. Laurel Jaguars and Hollydel Hurricanes hockey programs of South Jersey, and has taken teams to compete at both the State and National levels. Donahue stated, “My teams have the reputation of being extremely disciplined, well mannered and well coached. Nothing is given freely and you earn the right to play based on your actions on and off the ice”. John also added that he still maintains great relationships with his former players, some who have gone on to play at the Junior, NCAA, AHL and NHL levels. John not only coaches players, but he also has experience teaching and mentoring new coaches starting out in the game.

In his introduction interview, John stated: “I am excited to get started and look forward to establishing ourselves as a team that upholds the expectations of the University and its commitment to excellence on and off the ice.” The UD Hockey program, players, UDHAA, alumni and fans all now look forward to having Coach Donahue behind the bench this upcoming season and to the return of UD D1 Men’s hockey team for the 2017-18 season.

John grew up in Southern New England where he played youth hockey. He played 4 years NCAA D3 college hockey at Nichols College. In addition to hockey, he also played lacrosse at Nichols and was selected captain for both teams in his senior year.

John currently works for Hamburg Sud North America, as an Assistant Vice President for Equipment and Logistics. John and his wife, Linda, reside in South Jersey. Coach Donahue can be contacted at



After finishing a very successful 4 years as a student and hockey player at the University, Alex has decided to return to help coach the Blue Hens. He was a creator of the Blue Hen DIII program and is looking forward to continuing to help the Men’s D1 grow and succeed.

Prior to playing hockey at the University of Delaware, he spent four years at Saint John Vianney High School in Holmdel, NJ where he played football, hockey, and lacrosse. Growing up Alex played for many hockey club in New Jersey including the Red Bank Generals and the Old Bridge Jr. Knights.

At UD, Alex was the sports chair for UDance, the schools largest student-run philanthropy, UDance is a 12-hour philanthropic dance marathon that has helped raise millions of dollars over the last nine years to support medical research and financial assistance for families of children with cancer nationwide.

Entering his second year coaching, Rubin assists in all aspects of Delaware Hockey and is a main recruiter for potential Blue Hen Hockey players. He attends showcases throughout the United States and is in constant contact with Alumni located in other regions including the east coast, midwest, west coast, and south.

Todd joins the UD Hockey coaching staff after years of experience as a player, coach, and involvement in hockey operations.Todd originally grew up in Pittsburgh, PA playing Tier I and Tier II hockey. He played high school hockey for South Park High serving as Assistant captain and making the state All-star team his junior and senior year.

Todd played 4 years of ACHA I hockey at Washington and Jefferson College. As a freshmen and sophomore, he was part of two ECHL league championship teams. His Junior and Senior year, the team went to ACHA National Tournament ranked 9th and 15th respectively. As a defensemen, Todd had a career 6 goals and 53 assists over my four years and was one of the top players in the program.

Following his playing career, he joined the coaching ranks as an Assistant Coach for the Pittsburgh Predators as U-15-and U-16 years. Todd then became an expert in the hockey operations area spending four years at Adrian College working as the rink director and Director of Hockey Operations and athletic development for the school’s NCAA D3 and ACHA teams. Todd also created Adrian’s ACHA Division III team allowing for more players to play the game, while promoting the growth of hockey in Michigan.

Todd came to the University of Delaware in May 2016 and now serves as the Associate Director of Development for the College of Agriculture and Natural resources. Todd is also an active member of the UD Hockey Alumni Association Board and assists in all aspects of the UD D1 Ice Hockey Program.

Todd currently resides in Newark with his wife Ashley and 5 year old daughter Brynlee.

Former Blue Hen goalie Nick Matarese returns for his 10th season as one of the University of Delaware’s Asst. coaches helping with goalies along with other assistant duties.
Nick played four years for Delaware and was one of the netminders in both the ’07 and ’08 ACHA final four appearances posted by the Blue Hens. During high school, college, and still today he trained with and is an instructor at the Tim Ondra Elite Goaltending Training Center and brings this knowledge and experience of both on and off ice training to the goalies.
Nick is currently runs The Barn, his own creative design agency. The Barn is now an award winning company and one of the top design agencies in the Philadelphia and Delaware area.

He produces all UD Hockey media, promotions, and other graphic designs. Nick also recently designed and was under contract with the Columbus Cottonmouths of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) designing their new team logo, apparel, Jerseys, hockey gear, and promotional items.

He and his wife, Jenn, reside in St. Georges, Delaware.
